The Pliable Plane: Craft and Tectonics
Design Research
Ongoing

CONT...Explorations of weaving in three-dimensions, using a variety of materials, from yarn, to traditional basket-weaving reed, and elastic. Working within a cube, some of these studies are tensile and can’t be separated from their form, the reed, pliable when wet, will dry and become structural.

Large-scale installation design and fabrication with Nick Rummler, Antonio Torres, Aura Venckunaite

The Pliable Plane is the 2016 Faculty Exhibition at UIC School of Architecture. The exhibition asks participants to collectively explore architectural issues such as tectonics, materiality, form, pattern, and structure through the application of pliable materials. The interior surface is composed of textiles pieced together as in traditional quilt making, blown up into a large-scale spatial experience, creating spectacle through pattern and color. Layered with a second textile plane, the shape is overstuffed, further alluding to a grossly oversized quilt that is suspended in space.

The space, as experienced via passage up and down a stairwell, temporarily envelops the user and evokes a sense of softness, depth, and heaviness as you travel through the space. The back, or outside, observed from above, is a display of structure and tectonics as the object is suspended inside the gallery space.

Exhibition design with Ania Jaworska

Outside Design is a large-scale exhibition featuring projects and practices that explore design through biotechnology and ecological systems. The exhibition space is used for lectures, performances, instruction, laboratory research, and material display.

Our team was commissioned to design and coordinate the fabrication of 75 pieces of furniture including vertical pin-up and writing boards (for instruction), desks and benches (for lectures and instruction), and display tables (for exhibition). The furniture pieces are modular and can be used individually and in groups. My additional responsibilities included research and sourcing surface materials for all pieces, using texture and color to differentiate by purpose and use.
